Well written but more history than engineering

Definitely an extremely well-researched and well-written tome but about three-quarters of the book is about the politics and planning prior to the actual building of the canal. If that's what you are looking for, I'm sure you will enjoy it. I was hoping for more discussion of the creation of the canal community and the engineering of the canal and locks. A lot of reading to get to that portion of the book. Additionally, I think the book would have been served better with more maps and diagrams of the canal.

Also, keep in mind that the book was written in the mid(?)-70's so the history from the past thirty years is not included. A minor point, I know, but perhaps worth mentioning.

A Masterwork of research and storytelling about one of the engineering marvels of the modern world

Having seen the canal in person in 1978, and leaving thoroughly amazed at this masterwork in engineering, I've read various shorter accounts of the project in years since. But nothing comes close to this masterwork of scholastic research. I can't imagine a more thorough, comprehensive, end-to-end history of one of the most amazing and successful efforts mankind has ever attempted in terms of overcoming nature and geography. I knew of the previous French effort, and was also aware of the "Nicaragua" option, but to read of the intrigue, the politics, and the personalities that tried, failed, and influenced the ultimate outcome is riveting. It took the total commitment and faith of the United States Presidents (Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson) over 14 years to do what they seldom do - make a decision, fund it, and then leave it to the hands-on experts to make the real decisions in how to get it done. That, more than anything, seems to come through as the foundation for success. Having been in the tropics, and Panama, in more modern times one can still see the rampant jungle literally a few miles from civilization. To imagine the thousands of workers toiling day after day in the wet, mud, and unbearable heat is mind boggling, yet they did it. There were parts of the book where I thought it bogged down in minutiae, reading almost as minutes of endless rounds of meetings among French and/or U.S. politicians, lobbyists, lawyers, and those in authority for building the canal "on the ground" in Panama, but in the end I have only praise for David McCullough - it wouldn't have been a complete story without all of those background details. It was a stupendous effort, and it required a stupendous effort by a gifted researcher and writer to document it, and David McCoullough has done just that. Read about one of the engineering marvels and wonders of our modern day world. You'll be glad you did.

What a Story!!

As with all of his books, McCullough's research of history and presentation are unmatched. I had know idea what an epic undertaking the creation of the Panama canal involved. The political implications (for both the French and American); discoveries and advances in the prevention/treatment of tropical diseases; as well as engineering challenges/advancements are unbelievable! While yes- this is a long book, and, at times, seems like it could move faster: This is a must read for anyone wanting to learn important pieces of world history between the years of 1870 - 1914!

Understanding American medicine and health

This is a one-of-a-kind book. With a readable mixture of scholarship and humor, Mr. Green reviews the struggle for primacy among medical and popular health fashions over the history of the US. Before I read this book, I thought that the current state of medicine was inevitable and unquestionable. Not so; there was a struggle for domination that retains some signs of life today. Remember the old Saturday Night Live skits about leeches?

In addition, food and health fads that I never knew of, once held the minds of the avant garde, just as yoga and raw food do now. For example, the Kellogs and Post cereals were once at the heart of complete programs of health/fitness, taken very seriously by the hip public. Likewise graham crackers.

This book is illuminating and an easy read.

Great book! (1999 review) --> More amazed than ever before! (2009 update)

I've got the popular book "secret language of b-days" and I think this book is equally great. Both are excellent in my opinion. This book is a little different and more insightful in some ways. It tells about your possible work and vocation and even goes as far as possible dates of birth of soul mates, beneficial relationships, love and friendship relationships etc... overall, this book is worth buying

(2009 update/addendum)
Ten years later, having had many more significant relationships and having shared this book with friends along the way, I have to say, this book amazes me mainly in the 'Your Special Someone' dates which I referred to in my earlier 1999 review. For me & two of my close friends, these dates are chillingly accurate. I seriously don't know how authors Crawford & Sullivan did it, but to us three, these dates have been mind-blowing.

My friend Sandy had a hard time forgetting her so-called soul-mate. It took her about 3-4 years to get over him and move on. Their time together, to her, was simply magical. Turns out, his birthday was listed as one of her fatal attractions.

My best friend Michelle was curious about one of her ex-boyfriends (everything from their meeting to their courtship to their relationship strongly suggested they had a strong cosmic connection). When she looked at her 'your special someone' dates, she found that he indeed was her soul-mate & on top of that, she was his! Michelle had also found that another guy that she was wildly attracted to, was in fact her fatal attraction. All of the other guys she had dated were not significant enough to her and thus they did not appear in any of her dates.

The book also has been frighteningly accurate (your special someone) for me too. I've had 7 significant relationships and the only one who ever captured my heart, my true love, was also listed as my soul-mate. None of my other significant others were listed, besides one being under the 'beneficial' category. For me and my two good friends, this book does not lie about who is truly our soul-mates, fatal attractions, etc.

Some people, however, find this book to be inaccurate because it does not list the current person they are in a relationship with as love/friendship, fatal attraction or soul-mate. Truth is, most people we have relationships with AREN'T truly significant enough to qualify. I've had 7 relationships, but until I met my true love, never truly knew what a soul-mate was.

Unless you've experienced unmistakable sign after sign that you are supposed to be with this person, an uncanny string of events that led you to notice this person, then be introduced/get to know this person, an indescribable connection to the person that feels cosmic, you will probably not find any of your significant others listed as your soul-mates! A soul-mate is so much more than the best love of your life, or the person you've been with the longest. Those qualifiers have nothing to do with the true essence of being soul-mates, in my humble opinion.

In conclusion, 10 years after my first review, I've found that in retrospect that for me and my two friends, those truly significant relationships we've had seem to ALWAYS show up in the 'your special someone' section. In no way am I saying that this book is fool-proof or for everyone, but when all is said and done, it seems that for me and my friends, at least, this book continues to amaze with its shocking accuracy.

I think this book is probably a lesser known version of the big hardcover one called "The Secret Language of Birthdays: Personology Profiles for Each Day of the Year".
When I first discovered these book that was the one I read at the book store, but one day I went back and read this one that was right next to it for my birthday and compared the content, and this book was by far superior.
It is an exceptional book that I have gotten rather hooked on, now anyone that I just meet and get to know their birthdays I go and read up about them.
It used to be I didn't really believe in astrology but this one on your birth date I have found to be very accurate.
This book divides your astrology into several different sections i.e. your love, your career, numbers, advice and more. It is so indepth and in plain language and not astrology jargon, that you will find it hard not to look up everyone that you know and their birthdays.
By the way, the price is a lot higher than this if you plan on purchasing at a book store. Amazon, once again, has the best deal on this book and they ship it to you for free.

Very good, with a few flaws

GOOD THINGS ABOUT THE SERIES:

1. Ms. Aidan attempts to explain all sorts of questions which arise in Austen's story. She has invented a number of engaging characters and incidents which generally enrich the story line.

2. The writing style, details and behaviors are excellent and very true to what I have learned through research. For example, Darcy's apparent focus on clothing would have been appropriate at the time. Ms. Aidan portrays Darcy as a model of rectitude, intent on his duty and religiously devout; he is totally thrown off balance by his infatuation with Elizabeth. This is a very good characterization and fits perfectly with the few clues Austen gives. Aidan also gives him the poor self-awareness of many busy, consequential people: he mis-reads the effects of his actions, and misunderstands himself.

3. Aidan walks the reader through the mental processes of someone who is first infatuated, then almost obsessed, then truly in love. She attempts to show the deep internal crisis that Elizabeth's refusal of Darcy would initiate. He is first angry, then sorry for himself, then ashamed, then determined to live up to Elizabeth's ideals of "gentlemanliness."

FLAWS:

1. Aidan has Darcy too infatuated, too soon. He shows far too much adolescent angst over Elizabeth, which is not in keeping with a man who has been an extremely disciplined estate owner from a young age. As early as Netherfield, while Jane is ill, he is aware of Elizabeth's every move, almost blinded by his reeling senses. It's too much a teenage obsession, and only twice (I think) does he realize he is acting like a kid over her.

2. A big flaw: Aidan puts Darcy far too high in the social order, as the social equal of aristocrats. For example, he attends a party at Lord Melbourne's home (the future Prime Minister), where his neckcloth is admired by Beau Brummel. I actually researched the social order in England. I found Patrick Colquhoun's "A Treatise on the Wealth, Power, and Resources of the British Empire, 1814." That document lists Darcy as Second Class, with "baronets, knights, country gentlemen, (and) others with large incomes." Austen clearly states that Darcy is a gentleman, and Elizabeth is a gentleman's daughter. As an Earl's grandson, his precedents are better than Elizabeth's, but he himself is in the same class, only much richer. Darcy's only valid criticism of Elizabeth's class is the one Austen gives him - that of her "connections," meaning her family background of tradespeople.

When one looks at the Order of Precedence (see Wikipedia), one finds Darcy at #92, a gentleman entitled to bear arms, towards the bottom, while his cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam is #51, the younger son of an earl. (Thanks are due to Meg Hayward of the Jane Austen Society of Australia for helping to sort out the Order of Precedence.)Now I realize that Aidan's second book requires Darcy to rub shoulders with high society people, but she should have left him in his correct station and saved the story of the second book for another day. (By the way, knowing these details makes Lady Catherine de Bourgh a much richer, comic character: she is so arrogant about her station but is only a baronet's widow, which is the second lowest title, just above a knight, and is not considered peerage but gentry.)

3. Darcy's moral crisis falls short. While the second book explores Georgiana's character in terms of her religious, almost Methodist, transformation, Aidan pulls back from having Darcy really investigate his moral self. All he does is make a list of things required for "gentlemanliness." It's not enough to change a man who is proud of his heritage to one who is grateful for it, or to change Austen's "fastidious" man to a compassionate one who is willing to bail out Wickham in order to help a woman who has refused him.

4. A small flaw, but a real one: Aidan wrote with her thesaurus open, hunting for big words. Now I always love to use a $4 word instead of a 50-cent one, but "esurient" and "procacious?"

Great trilogy!

This trilogy is, in general, excellent! As described in other reviews, it tells the P&P story from Mr. Darcy's point of view--filling in a huge missing piece of the storyline that, with all due respect to Austen, is missing from the original novel.

In the original, we get only hints about the enigmatic Mr. Darcy who somehow undergoes major personal growth because of his "dearest, lovliest Elizabeth." In this trilogy, we learn more about him and understand the ramifications of his station in life and his upbringing, and exactly how he undergoes the transformation from "pride" to love. And how he really is "bewitched, body and soul" (dialog from the new movie version which shouldn't be missed!) by Elizabeth.

I liked books 1 and 3 of the trilogy the best; book 2 is about the "missing months" between Netherfield and Rosings, and is interesting but lacks the wonderful snappy interplay between Darcy and Elizabeth.

The main complaint I have with the trilogy surrounds Georgiana--who comes off somewhat wimpy and simpy rather than just a shy young girl. And sometimes the "dearest" interchanges between her and Darcy almost sound like lovers instead of brother and sister. The other complaint is way too much religious stuff in book 2--if I wanted to read Christian fiction I would, but I don't have any interest in that.

Regardless of any shortcomings these books may have, I HIGHLY recommend that any P&P addict read them. You won't be sorry. Ms. Aiden did a splendid job!

Good "fix" for Darcy-starved fans

I read Pride and Prejudice many years ago, but I occasionally watch the BBC miniseries whenever I need a "fix." So when I recently discovered the big business of re-working or continuing P&P, I was excited. I chose this book to start because it had some of the best reviews. I must say I was very pleased. I liked the way Ms. Aidan expands on the original story without changing the essence. She just fills in the behind-the-scenes parts we didn't read about in the original. It's like she made the book three times as long, and the more P&P, the better, I say! I especially like her imagined version of Darcy's relationship with his valet, Fletcher, and all of Fletcher's machinations to keep Darcy at the height of fashion. This first book in the 3-part series describes Darcy's meeting Elizabeth Bennet and the whole embarrassing Bennet family. Of course, the scenes between Darcy and Elizabeth are the heart of Pride and Prejudice. From what I've read, Elizabeth isn't in the second book at all, so I don't expect to like it as much, but I'll give it a chance. My only complaints about this book are the typo's and misspellings that simple editing should have prevented. At one point, the name of Bingley's brother-in-law, Mr. Hurst, was spelled "Mr. Hearst." That's just careless editing.

A book well worth your time!

The Children's Homer is a great book for older elementary children if they like adventure and are interested in learning about Greek society. It is an excellent book about the great Greek hero Odysseus and his son, Telemachus. When Telemachus is a baby his father, Odysseus, is called to go to war. When Telemachus grows older, the goddess Athene tells him to go seek his father. Telemachus obeys and great adventure begins. I personally thought that the names were hard to keep up with, but the book holds much magic and adventure. I also would have never wanted to read the book on my own, but I'm glad I got the chance in school. The book kept me interested just about all the time, and I always looked forward to reading more. My favorite character was Odysseus, because he was brave and wise. He would listen to advice given to him and was polite and thankful. I think I will always remember the story because it shows many good character traits that everyone needs.
